"1919--Students hold protests in Tiananmen Square, starting the May 4th Movement.
1949--Mao Zedong proclaims the People's Republic of China after leading a revolution that puts the Communist Party in power.
1966--The Cultural Revolution begins, leading to the death or imprisonment of millions of Chinese.
April 5, 1976--Major protest erupts in Tiananmen Square, prompted by Premier Zhou Enlai's death earlier in the year.
September 9, 1976--Mao Zedong dies and moderate Communists begin to take control of the government.
April 15, 1989--
Hu Yaobang, a moderate who opposes corruption, dies. Students go to Tiananmen Square to honor him.
April 19, 1989--
The number of pro-democracy protesters in the square grows to 20,000.
May 4, 1989--
A huge rally marks the anniversary of the 1919 student protests.
May 13, 1989--
Students begin a hunger strike to protest the government’s refusal to meet with them.
May 20, 1989--Li Peng declares martial law.
June 2, 1989--Protesters move to prevent Chinese soldiers from entering the square.
June 3-4, 1989--Troops move into the square, firing on protesters.
June 5, 1989--As tanks are moving out of Tiananmen Square a lone protester now known as Tank Man blocks a line of tanks from leaving the square.
June 4, 2013--
Tens of thousands of people gather in Hong Kong on
June 4 in what is now an annual
event to remember the 1989 crackdown."
